First 3 Things to Do When Moving Away to College

AVL - Moving Away to CollegeMoving successfully is the residual of planning ahead. A little advance research and preparation can save you time and money, making the transition to being a college freshman much easier. American Van Lines wants you to avoid being the freshman that started their college life off the wrong way. Thus, we wish to share with you the first 3 things you should do when you are moving into your dorm before the first day of class.

These tips are likely to be most beneficial to freshman students who are planning on moving out of town to a new area for college, since students who stay in the same hometown have easier access to various resources.

1. Facebook Me!

One of the most common forms of communication, after texting, is Facebook. Get on your Facebook page and start making new friends who will be students at the same college. Your college may even set up a page specifically for incoming freshmen to meet. However, while you’re at it make sure your own profile is updated and includes the information you want others to know about you. You should be able to find out some information on your roommate and possibly find other students who share your interests through the magic of Facebook.

2. Hit Up the Roomie.

Reach out to your future roommate to see what they can bring so you can split up the list. Rather than ending up with two TVs, perhaps you can share one. There are still items you’ll likely both need, like separate alarm clocks, extension cord/power strips, your own posters/decor items, socks and your own iPods/music systems, but checking beforehand makes sense for those things that will most likely be shared. Also, you should inquire about the residence hall rules pertaining to bringing appliances/electrical equipment.

3. Scout Out the Campus.

After you have settled in and before the first day of class, scout out the campus and confirm the amount of time it takes to get to your class locations. It might be a little geeky, but it will be one less thing to stress about on the first day of class. It’s probably been a while since you took the campus tour, so see if your roommate or other new friends want to walk around the campus with you. This is also a good way to find out where the “hotspots” on campus are, such as the hangouts and places to eat lunch.
