Hiring? Consider These Things Before Adding to Your Team

AVL - New EmployeesHiring an employee can be an overwhelming experience. For every position posted in today’s job market, there will be around one hundred applicants. Any job is certainly in high demand. For the employer it leaves many opportunities to find the right person. Selecting the right person for the job may not be as easy as one might think. Consider the following things when going through the hiring process:

Carefully Selecting The Right Person

When the piles of applications comes pouring in it can be overpowering. To make sure to find the right person the first step is to look at qualifications. This can be a tricky balance because someone overqualified might not stay and someone under qualified might not be able to do the job. It’s best to sort applications into three piles, overqualified, not enough experience and possible candidates. By doing this an employer can sift through the ones that are not going to work and they can focus on the ones that are possible.

Thoroughly Research The Resume

Before calling anyone in for an interview, it is important to thoroughly look at the resume. Look for gaps in employment or anything that might suggest they have a hard time staying put. With so many employees to choose from, it pays to be selective. Also look for phone numbers and valuable information about past employees. If a person has something to hide, they are not going to put such detailed information.

Making the Selection

Whether hiring for a moving company or a fast food restaurant makes no difference. The objective is to find the best employee who will stay around long term. It is advisable to call references before an interview. This gives employers a heads up on the kind of person they are going to be dealing with. In fact, after calling references many find they don’t even want an interview. The information from a previous employer is key; remember they used to work for them.

The New Employee

Armed with the information from past employers and an examination from the background, the right candidate is ready to be hired. It is a long process from start to finish, but it is one that must be done correctly. There is no room for errors in hiring a valuable employee. The only thing worse than being short staffed is having an employee that is causing problems and not pulling their weight.
