The Most Popular Sports in the World
Posted on June 6, 2012
Sports are big pretty much everywhere. Certain sports, to be sure, are more popular in some places than others. For hundreds of years, though, sports have been a very large part of society, a cultural mainstay. With so many countries in the world and people groups with varying interests, there will naturally be a few favorites when it comes to sports. While in the US there are a few sports that are consistently the most watched and followed, a look around the world will shed light on other sports with even more popularity. Many of them can be seen live, depending if you go somewhere specific for a long distance move or vacation. Here are the most popular sports in the world.
Soccer
Without question, soccer (more known as Football in many countries) is the most popular sport in the world. It is an international phenomenon with teams playing one another from different countries. In fact, there are over 200 countries that have there own national team. The game requires 11 players per side and is a very exciting game. It is also the highest paying team sport at the professional level.
Cricket
While Cricket may not be as well-known in the US it is surely a high ranking sport internationally. It is very popular in Asia, Austria, England, and in a few other countries. It is too a team sport and continues to grow in popularity as the years go by. It is a game with a few different formats, from test matches that last for 5 days to the more recent 20-20 format which lasts around 3 hours.
Tennis
The game of tennis was developed in England and is a huge sport all over the world. It is no doubt the most popular individual sport. Players do not rely on team work (unless you’re playing doubles) to advance themselves. It is every man, or woman, to themselves. The fact that there is no time limit can cause matches to run several hours, testing the endurance of both players, their wits and stamina.
Baseball
Baseball is arguably the biggest sport in the US and is also quite similar to Cricket. It is, like apple pie, synonymous with America. Also, baseball is one of most high paying sports in the world and attracts international players on a large scale.
