Nathan Hale was born in the then sleepy town of Coventry, Connecticut. At the sprightly young age of 13, Hale and his brother were sent off to study at Yale College. There he belonged to a literary fraternity and befriended future fellow spy Benjamin Tallmadge. Hale graduated with honors in 1773, just a short two years before the outbreak of the revolution. He worked as a teacher before enlisting in the army and quickly working his way up the ranks. Hale was only 21 years old when he crossed into New York to wiggle his way behind enemy lines and recover information regarding future British movements, a crime the British always punished in the same way – by death. In 1985, the state of Connecticut officially chose this hero, who by all accounts died far too young, to represent the state.
