He first got himself into trouble by performing illegal procedures as a medical doctor in Philadelphia. Hoping to escape lawful consequences, he hightailed it to California. From there, he spent time in Missouri before setting up a more permanent residence in the Jefferson Territory, a chunk of land that encompassed what is now Colorado and some of its surrounding areas. A strange series of events led this bizarre and fascinating character to name the territory that would become the state of Idaho, which became the 43rd state to join the Union on July 23rd, 1890. Willing was unsuccessful in lobbying Congress on behalf of the Jefferson Territory, but, in an eccentric turn of events, he was responsible for naming the newly formed territory to the north – what would become the state of Idaho. When the discussion of the new territory was raised, Willing, still in D.C., suggested it be called “Idaho,” which he claimed was a Shoshone word that roughly translated to “Behold! the sun coming down the mountain.” The word, much like the identity of its inventor, was entirely made up. Rumors later spread that Willing had come up with the name to honor a girl named Ida, whom he allegedly fancied. This has yet to be substantiated. The allure of Willing’s fabricated history remains, however, in some of Idaho’s own history textbooks, which claim, as Willing did, the Shoshone origin of the name.
