5 stars. Our driver, Edward B., was great. Gave great customer service and was so easy to work with. Our packer was Parker and he was awesome as well. I really appreciated the attention to protecting our belongings. I’m so thankful we used American.

I was honestly surprised by how pleasant my experience was with the American Van Lines team -- Rodley + his West Palm Beach-based crew were the BEST!!! Super polite, helpful, accommodating, efficient, and hard working. I cannot say enough good things about these outstanding men. The booking experience was seamless, and I really appreciated the support from our client experience/success manager, Christal. I was not super thrilled with certain aspects of the process (i.e. the large delivery window with little insight into pickup and drop-off days until immediately before, so you have to be a bit flexible) and upcharges along the way (elevators, stairs, shuttle if an 18 wheeler cannot access either of the properties), so a ~$5k job ended up to be more around ~$6k. Regardless, others quoted me ~$6.7-13k for the job, so I was thrilled overall. Highly recommend!

The movers showed up on time and spent 12 hours getting everything carefully packed and loaded onto the truck. They were at the house 6.5 hours away where we were moving the next day by lunch and 3.5 hours later all our stuff was in the house and we began the unpacking process. These three men were professionals and worked very hard to make sure we were happy. I can highly recommend American Van Lines.

All of the above. My experience with American Van Lines was excellent bar none from the very beginning. From the office staff to the movers a professional and class act all the way. Scheduling was perfect. I even received a call that my original pick-up and delivery date could be moved up which worked out perfect for me. The movers called and were a little ahead of time but that was okay. All of my items were carefully wrapped and packed with care. When my items were delivered to the final destination nothing was damaged or broken. I received telephone calls from the main office every step along the way and after the move was complete. If you are looking for a high quality, professional and caring team, I highly recommend American Van Lines for your moving needs.

Average Cost To Move From North Dakota to California

There's no one-size-fits-all price for a move. Your total will depend on your home size, where you're starting and ending within North Dakota and California, and add-ons like packing help or storage. On average, a move on this route can cost anywhere from $3,239–$11,826, and can take 4 - 15 days from pickup to delivery.

Here's a quick look at estimated costs based on home size:

Home Size Estimated Cost
1 Bedroom $3,239 - $6,692
2 Bedrooms $3,827 - $7,612
3 Bedrooms $5,119 - $8,359

All estimates are based on typical moving services and distance between major cities like Grand Forks, ND, and San Jose, CA.

Factors that Affect the Cost of Moving from North Dakota to California

Moving prices can fluctuate depending on the details of your relocation. These are the most common factors that can raise or lower the cost of your move.

  • Timing of your move: Costs are usually higher during peak season, with summer being the busiest time. You may also see higher pricing for weekends and for moves scheduled early or late in the month.
  • Professional vs. DIY: DIY can look cheaper on paper, but it requires you to manage the packing, lifting, and planning yourself. A full-service mover like American Van Lines can be a better value for the convenience and support, since AVL takes care of the heavy lifting and keeps the process less stressful.
  • Exact distance: Longer routes tend to cost more, and the exact mileage between your current home and your new one can also influence your final quote.
  • Size of move: The amount you are moving matters. Larger homes and bigger loads require more crew time and more space on the truck, which typically increases the price.
Getting a moving quote is simple. It's fast & easy - no obligations!

Tips for Moving From North Dakota to California

  • Research your new community early. Before moving day, take time to explore neighborhoods, schools, and local services in California. Knowing where the grocery store, DMV, or nearest coffee shop is will help you settle in faster.
  • Create a moving week checklist. Draft a week-of checklist with reminders like emptying the fridge, updating your address, and prepping essentials for your first night.
  • Set aside a "first night" box. Pack a clearly labeled box or bin with everything you'll need right away — think toiletries, chargers, a change of clothes, snacks, pet supplies, and basic kitchenware.
  • Take photos before disassembling furniture or electronics. Snap a few quick photos before unplugging wires or breaking down big items. It'll make reassembling your setup in California way easier.
  • Don't forget to transfer medical records and prescriptions. If you're switching doctors or pharmacies, request records in advance so you're not scrambling to find care in a new place.
