We used AVL after researching multiple interstate moving companies. We spoke directly with AVL management to let them know of the special timeline we were on for our move, once management understood our compressed timeline, they were able to fully accommodate us and execute the move flawlessly. I would like to point out that they maintained excellent communications from all of their team members to us during all aspects of the move. Our truck arrived on time, there were no issues with loading, the truck arrived on time at the destination( no damage or breakage). I would like to especially commend Jairo(our driver/lead man for both ends of the trip) on his outstanding organization and task delegating skill set. The moves on both ends were on time and seamless. All members of AVL deserve high praise for their understanding of the issues and for getting the right van and people to execute this move to perfection. Thanks again: Jay, Shabrina, Jairo and Dan. Thank you, Pete Zec

Average Cost To Move From South Dakota to Maryland

Moving costs can vary based on how much you're moving, where within South Dakota and Maryland you're moving between, and any extra services you might need (like packing or storage). On average, a move from South Dakota to Maryland might range anywhere from $3,456–$11,955, and take 3 - 8 days from pickup to delivery.

Here's a quick look at estimated costs based on home size:

Home Size Estimated Cost
1 Bedroom $3,456 - $6,355
2 Bedrooms $3,489 - $6,999
3 Bedrooms $4,690 - $8,452

All estimates are based on typical moving services and distance between major cities like Sioux Falls, SD, and Columbia, MD.

Factors that Affect the Cost of Moving from South Dakota to Maryland

Moving costs aren't one-size-fits-all, and a few key details can make your total price go up or down. Here are the most common factors that affect how much your move will cost.

  • Timing of your move: Prices tend to spike during peak moving season (especially summer), and moves booked on weekends or at the beginning or end of the month often cost more.
  • Professional vs. DIY: Choosing between a DIY move and hiring a full-service mover such as American Van Lines can make a big difference in your overall cost and experience. DIY can cost less upfront, but you'll be on the hook for the packing, heavy lifting, and logistics, while AVL takes care of the hard work for you, making the move smoother, safer, and far less stressful.
  • Exact distance: Longer moves generally come with higher quotes, and even small changes in mileage between your current home and your new one can affect the total cost.
  • Size of move: The more rooms (and stuff) you're moving, the more labor, time, and truck space you'll need, which usually means a higher overall price.
Getting a moving quote is simple. It's fast & easy - no obligations!

Tips for Moving From South Dakota to Maryland

  • Research your new community early. Before moving day, take time to explore neighborhoods, schools, and local services in Maryland. Knowing where the grocery store, DMV, or nearest coffee shop is will help you settle in faster.
  • Create a moving week checklist. Draft a week-of checklist with reminders like emptying the fridge, updating your address, and prepping essentials for your first night.
  • Set aside a "first night" box. Pack a clearly labeled box or bin with everything you'll need right away — think toiletries, chargers, a change of clothes, snacks, pet supplies, and basic kitchenware.
  • Take photos before disassembling furniture or electronics. Snap a few quick photos before unplugging wires or breaking down big items. It'll make reassembling your setup in Maryland way easier.
  • Don't forget to transfer medical records and prescriptions. If you're switching doctors or pharmacies, request records in advance so you're not scrambling to find care in a new place.
